If you are a long-standing yiḏaki enthusiast, you will appreciate this instrument painted with the rare yiḏaki-power miny’tji — a design not seen for more than a decade.

Djul’djul is a senior Yolŋu artist and the wife of the late Bruce Wunuŋmurra, a legendary yiḏaki maker whose instruments are renowned worldwide. Djul’djul played an important role in the yiḏaki-making process, painting many of the instruments crafted by her husband. Her artwork is well known and respected, many collectors and players recognise her distinctive style.
Murphy Wunuŋgmurra, who crafted this instrument, is the son of Djul’djul and Bruce. Instruments made by him and painted by his mother are sold and catalogued under Djul’djul’s name, in accordance with Yolŋu protocols.

This is a short but powerful instrument, offering a wide tonal range from deep bass to bright overtones. It is highly responsive to tongue and lip movements, with an open bore and high backpressure. As such, it is best suited to experienced players who can fully explore its dynamic potential. Besides its sound, zoom-in to see the detailed painting, it is stunning!
I recommend this yiḏaki to collectors who wish to own an instrument painted with a design that refers to those yiḏaki that embodies the qualities most sought after by Yolŋu.

Ŋaypinya is one of the traditional estates of the Gälpu clan, situated on the shores of Caledon Bay in the Gulf of Carpentaria, north of Birany Birany homeland. Gunyaŋara – also known as Ski Beach – is a small Indigenous community on the Gove Peninsula, 15 minutes drive from Nhulunbuy township, in the close proximity of the bauxite mine ex-refinery. It lays on Warramiri clan land, and today it gives home to over 150 people. The community was built in the ’70s as part of the mining development. Gunyaŋara is a semi-permanent home of many Yolŋu artists and yiḏaki makers.
