Cultural context

The clapsticks are one of the most ancient instruments in the world, used by many different traditions at every corner of our Planet. It plays an important part in the traditional Australian Aboriginal music as a rhythm keeper.

The name of the clapstick in the Yolŋu languages is biḻma. As in many other Aboriginal traditions, the biḻma has a significant ceremonial role in the Yolŋu culture to maintain the rhythms and carry the ceremonial law.
